Japan Society presents Gen’ichirō Inokuma’s NYC Salon, the first solo museum exhibition in New York City devoted to Japanese modern artist Gen’ichirō Inokuma (1902–1993). Organized in collaboration with the Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art (MIMOCA), the exhibition explores the multimedia work Inokuma created during his twenty-year residence in New York City (1955–1975) an examination of how the city transformed his artistic practice while positioning him within the vibrant international networks that defined New York’s postwar cultural landscape.

Bringing together significant loans from MIMOCA alongside works from Japan Society’s collection and the recently rediscovered New York private collection, the Hirose Family Collection, Gen’ichirō Inokuma’s NYC Salon traces the evolution of Inokuma’s painting while reconstructing the artistic community that surrounded him. Through paintings, photographs, film footage, correspondence, design objects, ephemera and personal artifacts, the exhibition offers a rare portrait of an artist whose life and work
intersected with many of the leading figures of the American avant-garde.

The exhibition opens with Inokuma’s arrival in New York in 1955 and the profound impact the city had on his artistic practice. Bringing together paintings spanning his two decades in Manhattan, including works reunited from his historic exhibitions at the Willard Gallery, the opening section examines how New York’s architecture, urban landscape, and spirit of experimentation inspired a dramatic shift in his visual language from earlier figurative compositions to the bold abstractions that would define his mature work. The exhibition continues with an immersive presentation of Inokuma’s photographic archive and rarely seen 8mm films which document the architecture, streets, parades, graffiti, and everyday life of midcentury Manhattan. Another section presents Inokuma’s idiosyncratic collection of American objects he came across while exploring the city. The presentation reveals NYC as an enduring source of artistic inspiration for Inokuma.

The Pinky Ring is a 1970s-inspired cocktail lounge and live music venue opened by Grammy Award-winning artist Bruno Mars at the Bellagio Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. Designed by Yabu Pushelberg, this opulent, adults-only destination immerses guests in the ambiance of a 1970s private penthouse party. The furniture, crafted by Stellar Works and inspired by the Rat Pack, Sammy Davis Jr., Silk Sonic, and cinematic music video lighting, offers a window into Bruno Mars’s imagination, high on drama but never ostentatious. Stellar Works is shaped by an Asian sensibility and an international perspective. Its design culture fuses Eastern restraint with Western modernity, resulting in furniture that feels both familiar and distinctly contemporary.
